MISSION STATEMENT
 
We, the members of the New Zion Missionary Baptist Church vow: 
 
  • To preach the gospel;
  • To teach the world about our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ;
  • To minister in christian service to the community in which we are located;
  • To promote the spirital development of believers; and 
  • To seek the salvation of the lost through evangelism in missions at home and abroad. 
 
CHURCH HISTORY
 
In 1881, the church was organized in a 2-room house on the corner of Division Street and Boundary (now 7th and Edgewood Ave.), under the name of Pollocks Chapel with Reverend Mose Pollock presiding as Pastor.
 
During the years 1912 through 1913 the church was remodeled and a cornerstone laid with the names of eight (8) church deacons: Deacon Julius Brown, Deacon Matt Howard, Deacon Early Lowe, Deacon Allen Jemison, Deacon Edmond Omington, Deacon  Williams Flass, Deacon Fred Irby, and Deacon Bob Burkett.
 
Past pastors include Reverend Mose Pollock, Reverend Clayborn Smith, Reverend Jackson, Reverend Silas Rollins, Reverend T. W. Walker, Reverend Evans, Reverend C. W. Woodard, Reverend R. D. Arline, Reverend Calvin Jones, Reverend W. W. Weaver, Reverend Joe W. Jones, Reverend E. D. White, Reverend E. J. Calhoun, Reverend W. W. Reynolds, and Reverend Little William.
 
The New Zion Baptist Church came into being after the Second Street Baptist Church split into three (3) groups: Mt. Olive, Friendship and New Zion. The church called New Zion was located at 310 Edgewood Avenue.  
 
 
The Reverend J. A. Jackson served as Pastor of New Zion Baptist Church from 1942 through 1986. The church relocated to the current location, 1611 Burton Avenue in May 1974.  Three brothers were called to ministry and delivered their trial sermons at the New Zion Baptist Church: Reverend Curtis Bason – November 9, 1980; Reverend Walter Hawthorne – June 5, 1986; and Reverend George Smith – January 18, 1987.
 
The Reverend Willie D. Daughtry, Jr.  served as Pastor of New Zion Baptist Church from 1986 through 2005. In October 1991, a church cornerstone was laid and in November 1992, the church mortgage was burned. In October 1997, a 15-passenger van was purchased. In 2000, the church was blessed with a lighted sign out front. In August of 1995, Sister Kimberly Brooks was the first female to deliver her trial sermon and get licensed at the New Zion Baptist Church. Later, Minister Gene Thomas was licensed as minister at the New Zion Baptist. 
 
The Reverend Roy Wesley, Sr., current Pastor of the New Zion Baptist Church was called in August 2006.  A mid-week bible study was implemented and through his preaching and teaching the word of God, souls are being added to the membership. The church was renovated (inside and outside the sanctuary) and windows throughout the church were replaced. A new PA system was installed and new hymnal books were purchased, as well two 16-passenger vans.  In 2008, three new deacons were ordained, Deacon Cedric Miller, Deacon Anthony J. Stephens and Deacon Johnnie Ray Thomas. In 2012, Minister Ronnie Mitchell and Minister Tanis Woolfork were licensed and assigned at the New Zion Baptist Church.
